The Clinical Difference

According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3), here’s the short version:

Tension Headache

  • Feels like a tight band around both sides of the head.

  • Dull, pressing pain, not pounding.

  • Doesn’t worsen with movement.

Migraine

  • Pain on one side of the head.

  • Throbbing or pulsating pain.

  • Moderate to severe intensity.

  • Worsens with movement.

  • Often comes with nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound.

  • Attacks last 4–72 hours and must occur at least five times for diagnosis.

Some people also experience aura, flashing lights, zigzags, or tingling sensations before the pain begins.

That’s hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds gone.
